Strongwell fabricated and preassembled a 10' x 250' component of fiberglass operating aisle platform from EXTREN Series 625 structurals and molded grating for use in the caustic chlorine plant portion of a Saudi Arabian petrochemical project valued at $3.6 billion.
The platforms were supplied in preassembled condition to Saudi Arabia. Four fiberglass operating aisle walkways that have the same design are used between chlorine cells. Fluor Corporation of Irvine, California managed and procured this project, and Dravo Corporation of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania designed the chlorine facilities.
Advantages of Using Fiberglass
Selecting appropriate materials for use in the chlorine production area was vital due to corrosion and safety factors. The selection of fiberglass was owing to its excellent resistance to the highly corrosive materials such as hydrochloric acid, chlorine, and sodium hydroxide. Although glass will be attacked by sodium hydroxide, the structural shapes’ synthetic polyester surfacing veil and resin rich surface provide adequate protection from this caustic agent.
Moreover, the non-conductivity nature of the fiberglass was also a reason for its selection in designing the platform components. Since up to six million volts DC can be generated by the electrolysis, the use of conductive materials was reduced by design. Besides providing the aisle platforms, Strongwell also supplied electrical barriers, handrail systems, ladders and ladder cages for the project.
