Oceanus Resources has provided the details of the exploration progress from the company’s wholly-owned base metal and gold property in Lac Mégantic, Quebec.
The location of this Lac Mégantic property is approximately 70 km towards the southeastern part of Thetford Mines in Quebec. A 75 km of potential volcanic and sedimentary units trending towards the northeast and southwest underlies this land position. Based on the historic results, trend mineralization was formed for base and precious metals. Nebnellis-Ditchfield, Maston and Piopolis-Maston are the three popular showings present at the property.
The company carried out a phase I reconnaissance program, including grab sampling, geological prospecting and mapping, lithological and alteration detailing, and assaying. The company specifically targeted the central 20 km segment of a 75 km northeast-southwest structure, where a comprehensive aerial geophysical survey was conducted in the fall season of 2010.
The rock obtained along the geological survey matches with the popular geology of the region. Majority of structural features have shown that the lithology is sharply dipping towards north-west. An important mineralized zone was not covered during the previous phase of sampling and geological surveys. Two additional target regions were discovered through the further analysis of geophysical magnetic aerial survey and a phase II exploration has been suggested to be carried out over those targets.
The Lac Mégantic property has numerous styles of mineralization that include:
- Silurian and Ordovician volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits and associated iron and manganese formation of the Post-Taconian trans-tensional rift basins
- Copper-molybdenum and copper-gold porphyries of the Post-Taconian fore-arc and volcanic-arc basins
- The Acadian Orogeny’s lead-silver vein mineralization, plutons together with hypothermal tungsten and molybdenum and gold-bearing replacement mineralization present in iron formation
- Gold placers of Quaternary glaciations and Tertiary pedogenesis
- Gold in alkaline syenites, breccia pipes and lamprophyre dykes of the Quebec and New England alkaline intrusives
