To prevent wear and extend the service life of components, wear plates are utilized in power plants, cement companies and many other industries. The following is a case study about the use of overlay wear plates in the mining industry.
Problem
The study is based on a problem in an underground molybdenum mine in Colorado. A number of 90 ton side dump haulpak trucks transport ore to a primary crusher from loading chutes. The ore is dumped into the crusher via two lower slide doors of the truck that are lined with 13 mm Brinell 500 wear plates. The sliding causes severe abrasion, thus requiring mandatory replacement of the Brinell 500 wear plates after six months.
Features of NanoSteel Overlay Wear Plate
A solution was tested to prevent the frequent replacement of the Brinell 500 wear plates by using NanoSteel SHS 9700 overlay wear plates instead, on one of the trucks. The NanoSteel SHS 9700 overlay wear plates provide greater resistance to abrasion with extended service life.

Benefits of the NanoSteel SHS 9700
The underground molybdenum mine greatly benefited due to the replacement of the Brinell 500 wear plates with the NanoSteel SHS 9700 overlay plates.
- The mine managed to eliminate the three pairs of replacement wear plates
- The service time of the truck was increased
- The production output and revenue was increased
- The manpower hours during three replacement cycles was avoided

Summary
The NanoSteel SHS 9700 overlay wear plates was continuously used even after hauling over 3 million tones during a 28 month period, in contrast to the Brinell plates which had to be replaced every 6 months.
