TransAlta Plans Natural Gas Extension to Sundance Coal Plant in Alberta

TransAlta Corp has said that it intends to build a natural gas extension to its Sundance Coal Plant in Alberta. The combined cycle plant will replace the power generated by a coal fired generator at its facility near Edmonton.

The coal generators have to be retired as per new federal legislation announced this summer. The 800 mega watt proposed natural gas fired generator will provide power to the huge Sundance plant which is the largest energy generation station in Western Canada.

Dubbed as the Sundance 7 plant, the natural gas plant will help the transition process of the company from coal fired generators. It will be built adjacent to the Sundance facility which is about 70 km west of Edmonton. The location will allow the company to take advantage of the existing infrastructure and experience of the staff.

TransAlta is the largest independently owned power generator in Canada. The Calgary based company also runs wind, solar, hydro and natural gas facilities in Canada, United States and Australia.
