China Rescues 29 Trapped Coal Miners

29 miners trapped in a Chinese mine were rescued on Monday. The China Central Television broadcast live images of people being rescued from the coal mine in the Sichuan province.

In a rather disaster prone country the mine rescue was accomplished barely 24 hours after the mine workers were stranded in the pit. This is being contrasted with the situation in New Zealand where 29 miners have been trapped in a coal mine since an underground explosion last week. Rescue operations have been stalled in New Zealand due to the presence of toxic and inflammable gases.

Of the total 35 miners who were trapped in the Batian mine near Nejian city 13 managed to escape when the explosion flooded the mine. However seven of them returned for a failed rescue mission and were trapped again Xinhua news agency reported.

China has a disastrous record for mining safety and in the last year alone more than 2,631 mine workers have lost their lives in mining operations across the country. The Chinese authorities are seriously working towards improving the safety levels of the mining operation in the country. The latest recue seems to vindicate such efforts.
