33 Miners Trapped in Chilean Copper Mine

The 33 miners trapped in a mine in Chile will have to wait even longer to be rescued due to a fresh cave in. The accident occurred in a San Jose copper mine near the city of Copiapo in north Chile.

The miners were trapped due to the collapse of a tunnel on Thursday, no contact has been made with them since.

Rescue workers have now begun drilling holes to provide the miners with food, water and oxygen. They also plan to lower sound detection equipment in order to locate the exact position of the miners. The mine is owned by a private firm called San Esteban.

Three teams attempting to reach the trapped miners through a ventilation shaft were stopped when it got blocked by a cave in. The mining minister Laurence Golborne made a statement that it could take up to a week to now reach the trapped miners.

The miners are believed to be trapped around 900 feet vertically underground in a winding mine. The main roof collapsed on Thursday about 328 feet above the heads of the miners.
