Papua Wants to Refine its Own Gold

Papua New Guinea (PNG) hopes to build its own gold refinery which would be operated in a joint public and private partnership.

John Pundari, Mining Minister said at the PNG Mining and Petroleum Investment conference in Sydney that the government was exploring the possibility of establishing an internationally accredited refinery in the country.

He said that he wanted all the gold that was produced in Papua New Guinea to be stamped with the Papua New Guinea flag rather than being sent to Australia to be refined. Mr Pundari also said that the refinery would create jobs in Papua New Guinea and add to the value of the nation.

He said that he believed they were mere custodians of the collective wealth of the nation. He felt that it was part of the total measure of responsibility on their part to sustain the mineral wealth for the benefit of the nation’s future generations.
