Proposal for a Single National Regulatory Body for Oil and Gas in Australia

Yet another pre-election promise involves setting up a single national regulatory body for the oil and gas industry as per Resources Minister Martin Ferguson.

The single national body would be able to speed up decision making and address the issues related to the industry in a focused manner with appropriate resources at hand.

However not all states would welcome such a move. Western Australia in particular is already vowing to retain its approval powers. The Western Australia Mines and Petroleum Minister Norman Moore stated that he remained opposed to the plan which would have a major impact on the state's ability to manage its economy.

Mr. Ferguson was speaking in Perth at an oil and gas conference and felt that after the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and the Montara oil spill off Australia's northwest coast a stronger regulation of the industry was indicated.

In response to Mr Ferguson's statement the Australian Petroleum Production & Exploration Association chief executive Belinda Robinson said the industry supported the creation of a national regulator that removed duplication.
