The company has prospecting rights for two blocks of 225 square kilometers and if the deposits found there are viable Coal India will invest to the tune of $400 million to extract them. The director of Coal India was speaking in an interview in Maputo which is the Mozambican capital when he mentioned that up to 3,000 people would be employed by the company if the plans went right.

The Kolkata based company is looking overseas to meet the 8 million ton coal deficit that India currently faces. There are plans to export the coal from the port of Beira at present and after 25 years from the Nacala port.

A delegation led by the Indian Coal Minister Sriprakash Jaiswal to Mozambique arrived today and included the company director Mr Khurana.
