South Heart Coal Completes Dakota Mine Application

South Heart Coal LLC has filed their application to build the 4,600-acre project new coal mine in southwestern North Dakota. They are hoping to supply lignite to a $2.2 billion electric power plant that a separate company, South Heart Energy Development LLC, plans to build nearby. The powerplant will produce 175 megawatts of electricity.

State regulators have now put the plans for the proposed 4,600 acre mine which will be located southwest of South Heart open to public comment and an informal hearing. Commissioner Kevin Cramer said that an informal conference is likely to give people a chance to ask questions about the proposed mine. Tony Clark the Public Service Commission chairman said that projects like this are things that have been talked about for some time.

The lignite fed to the electric power plant will get converted to synthetic gas and hydrogen, which will be used to power electric turbines as per company filings. However the vice president for environmental issues for South Heart Energy Richard Southwick said that there was no definitive schedule for the construction of the power plant.
