IMX Resources has finally opened its Cairn Hill Mine located 55 km south east of Coober Pedy. The South Australian Premier Mike Rann officially opened the mine which is being seen as the first of the next generation of iron ore miners in South Australia this century.
Premier Rann said at the opening celebration that the first iron ore mine at Iron Knob in South Australia became an icon of the Australian steel industry and played an important part in Australia’s history by forging the future development of steel making, engineering and ship building for the nation. He had similar hopes from the new mine.
The Chairman of IMX Resources Johann Jacobs said that they were very proud to be the next wave of iron ore producers in South Australia. He also said that sufficient port and rail infrastructure was the key to delivering a sustainable iron ore industry for South Australia.
IMX Resources is looking at Cairn Hill as the cornerstone of its core business in the future of iron ore and steel making materials. It hopes to increase its resource base with acquisitions and more exploration.
The mine is the 12th one in the state and the government hopes that four more will be opened by the end of the year.
