The Resources Super Profits Tax or RSPT announced by the federal government has South Australian Labor MP Lyn Breuer worried. The planned mining tax would adversely affect the OneSteel mill which is a major employer in Ms Breuer’s Whyalla region.
Ms Breuer is worried that the new mining tax would have a major impact on the operations of the OneSteel mill and that it may even be forced to close operations. This would leave a large part of the electorate unemployed.
Similar concerns exist for BHP Billiyon’s Olympic Dam mining operations in her region. This is why Ms Breuer is planning a trip to Canberra accompanied by local council members to try and meet the Prime Minister, the Treasurer and the Federal Mining Minister.
Ms Breuer feels that the closing down of OneSteel would take Whyalla off the map and that is why she needed to get a better understanding of the mining tax.
