New Manganese Mine for South Africa

Tshipi e Ntle Manganese Mining (Pty) Ltd. board of directors has decided to allocate $200 million for the construction of the Tshipi Borwa manganese mine located near Hotazel in the Northern Cape region.

The Tshipi e Ntle Manganese Mining company is controlled by black investors and is part of the black empowerment program of Saki Macozoma.

Ntsimbintle Mining holds 50.1 % stake in Tshipi e Ntle Manganese Mining. This is a company chaired by Saki Macozoma and includes in its ranks many black investors and charities. OM Holdings, the Singapore based investor is also a shareholder in Ntsimbintle and is likely to market some of the new mine’s manganese output. The remaining stake in Tshipi e Ntle Manganese Mining is held by an Australian developer called Jupiter Mines ltd. This is a manganese and iron ore developing company.

The Tshipi Borwa mine is likely to begin production in another 18 months if it holds true to the current construction schedule. The mine will be designed to produce 2.4 million tonnes of manganese ore annually. The life of the mine is expected to be about 60 years.

As manganese is a metal with important industrial metal alloy uses, particularly in stainless steels there is currently a huge market for the mineral globally.
