Patriot Coal Idles West Virginia Coal Mine

Patriot Coal Corp. (NYSE:PCX) has temporarily halted production at its Rivers Edge mine in West Virginia. The mine authorities said that they had closed the mine to deal with a flooded area within the mine.

The report to the Securities and Exchange Commission said that the company had successfully evacuated all workers from the mine when the heavy rains caused the flooding to begin.

Currently 75 mine workers are employed at the Rivers Edge mine by the company. One of the employees had noticed the excess water behind two seals on March 7 and the Mine Safety and Health Administration had issued an imminent danger order to the company.

The St Louis, Missouri based Patriot Coal Corp said that the flooding was caused in a mined out area. They also expected that production would resume at the mine by next week. The mining company controls 1.8 billion tons of proven and probable coal reserves. Patriot shares closed at $22.59 on Friday on the New York Stock Exchange following the week’s news of the mine closure.
