Selwyn Chihong Mining Ltd is now mobilizing mining equipment and supplies for exploration at its Howard’s Pass property. The advanced underground exploration is part of the feasibility study at the largest known lead and zinc deposit in the world. The deposit is situated along the Yukon and Northwest Territories border and stretches for about 66 km.
The $100 million exploration project is a joint venture between Vancouver-based Selwyn Resources Ltd. and a Chinese mining company. Those in charge said that they expected the exploration activities to begin this summer at the Howard’s Pass property.
They are still awaiting environmental approvals as plans to release wastewater into a nearby creek have been protested by the Liard First Nation in Watson Lake, Yukon. Selwyn Resources president and chief executive officer Harlan Meade said that he expected the additional approvals from the Yukon Water Board to satisfy the First Nation's concerns.
Two companies from northern British Columbia have been contracted by Selwyn Chihong Mining Ltd to work on a winter road which is the immediate access to the property. The road was constructed in 1976-80 but the Mackay Range Development Corp., will have to make it an all season road. They are also in charge of moving the mine equipment to the property.
