Campbell Newman Happy to Offload CSG Shares

Campbell Newman a Liberal National Party leader said that the Queensland state government had failed to regulate the proper growth of the coal seam gas (CSG) sector in the state. The party wants stronger scrutiny of CSG mining and this was outlined by Shadow Primary Industries Minister Ray Hopper as well.

In fact MP Howard Hobbs another Liberal National Party member said that he would even consider selling his shares in a coal seam gas company if it happened to start its operations in Queensland. He owns shares in Eastern Star Gas a company which owns 65% of the Narrabri CSG project. The project is located in the western part of New South Wales.

Mining Minister Stirling Hinchliffe brought out this point in the State Government Estimates hearings yesterday saying that Mr Hobbs wants to stop the CSG industry in Queensland where we have one of the strongest regulatory frameworks in the world. "But he is also happy to personally profit from a company exploring and drilling for CSG in New South Wales where no safeguards for landholders exist.”

Earlier this month Mr Hopper had said that they needed to ensure the overall benefits from mining and gas extraction are available to the wider community and, in the rush to develop gas fields, irreparable damage is not done to the vital aquifers.
