Russia to Help Iran Develop Huge Zinc, Lead and Silver Deposit

Russia is to help Iran develop a zinc deposit. The Mehdiabad zinc and lead deposit is the largest in the world and an agreement has been reached between the two nations to develop the resource. Deposits at the Mehdiabad reserve, near Yazd in central Iran, amount to 394 million tonnes of zinc, lead and silver.

The deal was signed on September 11 as the Russian Energy Minster Sergei Shmatko came for a trade meeting to Iran. The Russian Energy Minister and the Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi announced together that they would be creating the joint venture between state owned Russian Technologies and Tehran state Bank Saderat.

The bank has been under international sanctions since 2008 when the UN Security Council passed the resolution to tighten sanctions on Tehran for its nuclear activities. Iran has insisted that the bank be part of the development of this project.

The development of the zinc deposit is reported to be worth $1 to $1.2 billion. A Turkey-Seychelles company Kapsad International will also be part of the joint venture. The deal was being seen through by the Deputy Prime Minister Igor Sechin. Russia has warmer relations with Iran despite being part of the six nation group which is asking Tehran to restrict its nuclear development program.
