Employment opportunities in the mining sector in Western Australia are growing steadily. The Australian Bureau of statistics has shown that total mining employment has hit 100,000 in the state and is likely to rise.
Damian Callachor the director of the Western Australia Chamber of Minerals and Energy said that the actual challenge with the state will be to sustain this growth. As the demand grows the state may find it difficult to find people with the required skills locally. He added that the state will need more engineers and electrical contractors due to the huge construction activities that the iron ore projects in the Pilbara region need.
Mr Callachor said that with expansion of projects in the south west and the burgeoning iron ore industry in the mid-west, there is likely to be much growth in the near future. He hopes that by 2013 the workforce employed in the mining industry will reach the figure of 120,000.
In the last ten years the employees of the mining sector have gone from 26,500 to 101,100. This is a testament to the great strength of the resources sector in Western Australia. The massive increase is due to the large number of projects operational in the state and the couple of large scale operations which are constantly expanding their workforce.
