Collegiate teams at the Supermileage engineering competition by SAE International are the envy of many drivers as their hand-built competition vehicles can get up to 3000 mpg.
The event being held on June 7-8 at the Eaton Corporation Proving Grounds in Marshall, Mich will showcase these vehicles.
This competition is hosted by Eaton with the goal of creating public awareness on using fuel economically. The challenge is to construct a single-person, fuel-efficient vehicle based on a four cycle, one-cylinder engine. The vehicle that achieves the highest mpg average over a distance of 9.6 mi will be declared the winner.
Almost 30 teams from Canada, Pakistan, Mexico and the US are participating in the event. SAE International’s Collegiate Design Series include other competitions like Clean Snowmobile Challenge, Baja SAE, Aero Design and Formula SAE. The Collegiate Design Series as well as A World in Motion Curriculum received the honorable 2008 Public Service Award for National Science Foundation.
Eaton has partnered with SAE International for the Supermileage competition due to its range of automotive products, which offer enhanced fuel economy ratings by the improvement of specific and overall system efficiencies. The company also desires to motivate young engineers to pursue automotive industry careers.
SAE International is a global network with over 133,000 engineers and technical experts in the automotive, aerospace and commercial vehicle industries.
