Alcoa Receives Two Awards For Aluminum Excellence

Alcoa was recognized with two awards for aluminum excellence yesterday at the American Metal Market 2nd Annual Aluminum Summit held in New York.

“Sustainability is at the core of Alcoa, and aluminum has the distinction of being infinitely recyclable”

Alcoa was the recipient of an Innovation Award for its next-generation of aluminum-lithium alloys for the aerospace industry. The award was accepted by Eric Roegner, President of Alcoa Forgings and Extrusions, and Mark Vrablec, President of Alcoa Aerospace, Transportation and Industrial Products. Together, Roegner and Vrablec oversee Alcoa businesses serving the aerospace structures and propulsion market.

"Aluminum-lithium alloys are winning over composites, titanium and legacy alloys in the aerospace industry," said Roegner. "Customer demand for aluminum-lithium alloys has led to the development of a new state-of-the-art facility next to our plant in Lafayette, Indiana. This site will add 20,000 tons of capacity to our network that will produce the largest, highest purity aluminum-lithium ingots in the world. Expansions are also planned for our Kitts Green plant in the UK and at Alcoa Technical Center near Pittsburgh, which will collectively increase aluminum-lithium capacity by 30 percent," added Roegner.

"Our new alloys have completely changed the playing field in the aerospace wing and fuselage structures market and are helping our customer's customers save fuel, and our direct customers save in the production phase and eliminate production risk," said Vrablec.

In addition to the innovation award, Alcoa Vice President and Chief Sustainability Officer Kevin Anton was honored with the Charles Martin Hall Award as Aluminum Ambassador/Advocate of the Year for his efforts to promote sustainability for Alcoa and the U.S. Aluminum Association trade organization. He was also recognized for his leadership in convening the first-ever Action to Accelerate Recycling Summit held earlier this year in Dallas, where more than 90 leaders representing nearly all of the packaging and beverage industries in the U.S. collaborated on a plan to drive higher recycling rates.

"Sustainability is at the core of Alcoa, and aluminum has the distinction of being infinitely recyclable," said Anton. "I am privileged to receive this award for our sustainability efforts involving this miracle metal."

It is the inaugural year for the American Metal Market Awards for Aluminum Excellence Program, which recognizes the most innovative companies in the field across multiple categories. Winners are selected by a judging panel made up of leaders in the aluminum industry.
