Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSM) has conferred Alcoa’s Sandow mine located in Texas with the “Good Neighbor Award” in the Excellence in Surface Coal Mining Awards for 2012.
The company was honored as it successfully worked with the community, while carrying out typical mining and recuperation at its Sandow mine.
Community attempts targeted initiatives that were taken as part of the company’s yearly volunteering program on Green Works. Staff at the mine worked along with local Boy Scout groups and their leaders, the Milam County, Texas Parks and Wildlife Game Warden to store and shift trees, plants and fishes, and also help with beekeeping jobs at the mine.
Green Works program of Alcoa is a universal volunteering initiative campaign conducted for two months, every year. This program was specifically created to help the ecological campaigns of the company and to commemorate global environmental holidays such as World Environment Day, Earth Day and Arbor Day. Approximately 20,000 workers of the company around the globe participated in the program in 2012.
According to Tommy Hodges, Alcoa Energy Manager, the Green Works program shows the commitment of the company towards the natural resource sustainability found in the Sandow mine, and demonstrates exceptional environmental stewardship.
OSM will officially present the award to Alcoa at the MINExpo Convention located in Las Vegas, Nevada. The event will be held from 24 to 26 September, 2012.
