Optech was incorporated in Toronto in 1974 as a spin-off of founder Dr. Allan Carswell’s lidar research at York University. It was here that Optech first developed and commercialized innovative lidar products, from atmospheric lidar systems to bathymeters to rangefinders. Since then the company has grown from a handful of employees to over 250 staff in four facilities, plus overseas contractors. Toronto’s large and cosmopolitan population, well-developed infrastructure and worldwide transport links make it an excellent operations hub.
The Toronto headquarters handles the design, development, manufacture and support of most lidar systems and Optech products, including the line of Airborne Lidar Terrain Mappers (ALTM), Lynx Mobile Mappers, and ILRIS and CMS terrestrial laser scanning systems. It also delivers products, sales, service, training and support globally.
Much of Optech’s work is performed at this purpose-built headquarters, which includes a range of customized design, production, integration and calibration laboratories. Final testing and validation is performed with Optech’s dedicated fleet of aircraft and vehicles on our established survey framework and local GPS network.
In 2015 Optech was completely acquired by Teledyne Technologies through its Teledyne DALSA subsidiary, and now operates as Teledyne Optech.
Teledyne Optech is currently the world leader in high-accuracy lidar 3D survey systems, integrated cameras, and productivity-enhancing workflows. With operations and staff worldwide, teledyne Optech offers both standalone and fully integrated lidar and camera solutions in airborne mapping, airborne lidar bathymetry, mobile mapping, terrestrial laser scanning, mine cavity monitoring, and industrial process control, as well as space-proven sensors.
