Eitelite is a trigonal-rhombohedral mineral, consisting of sodium, oxygen, magnesium, and carbon.
It was named after Wilhelm Eitel, Director of the Institute of Silicate Research, University of Toledo, Ohio, who first produced it.

How to Identify Eitelite
Eitelite can be identified by its white color or colorless forms. It has a transparent appearance, with a distinct cleavage, a vitreous luster, and a white streak.
The average density of eitelite is 2.7 g/cm3, and its relative hardness is 3.5.
Global Distribution
Eitelite is distributed in the following places:
- Kermit Poulson No. 1 well, Duchesne Co. Green River Formation, USA
- Mapco Shrine Hospital #1 well, Duchesne Co. Green River Formation, USA
- South Ouray well, Uintah Co.
- Vuonnemiok River Valley, Khibiny massif, Kola Peninsula, Russia
Occurrence of Eitelite and Useful Mineral Association
Eitelite occurs in dolomitic shale, alkaline igneous pluton, and bituminous marlstone.
It is closely associated with northupite, shortite, nahcolite, trona, crocidolite, searlesite, leucosphenite, and reedmergnerite.
