Indian Government Will Not Interfere With Traditional Mining in Meghalaya

Under charges of not regulating coal mining from the opposition party in the Indian state of Meghalaya, the state Mining Minister BM Lanong said that the Government did not intend to disturb the traditional mining methods of the tribes in the area.

BM Lanong said in the state assembly that the center has also said it does not wish to disturb the customary rights of the tribal people who have been practicing traditional mining since decades. The state government also does not wish to interfere. The sensitive issue required the state government to tread carefully as per the mining minister. He added that the new mining policy would try to strike a balance.

However the state opposition leader Conrad Sangma felt that the state was headed for disaster if the mining activities went unregulated. He added that the state government could not keep ignoring the issue as it was an environmentally sensitive one. The Siju caves were under threat due to the mining as per Mr Sangma.
