Rescue Workers Race to Save Trapped Miner in Northeast Idaho

The Lucky Friday mine outside Mullan is the scene of a rescue attempt to save the life of a 53 year old man who was trapped in the mine in Northeast Idaho as he was underground. The miner has been trapped inside the mine since Friday afternoon and there has been no contact with him since.

Rescue workers were waiting for a remote controlled digger that would speed up the rescue process without causing more collapses. Larry Marek had been inside the collapsed mine with his brother who managed to escape unharmed. The miner has been with the Hecla Mining Company which operates the mine for the last 12 years.

Rescue squads of up to ten members have been working in 12 hour shifts to try and locate and rescue Marek. They have cleared up 32 feet of the 75 feet caved in earth. The men were working to reach the 10 foot by 20 foot section which had its roof collapse. They hope that he is in an area where ore is removed away from the worst of the cave in.

The president and chief executive officer of Hecla Mining Company, Phil Baker said that they were doing everything they could to reach the employee and would continue to make every effort for as long as it took. Hecla has been running the Lucky Friday mine since 1958 in the Coeur d’Alene region. Phil Baker promised that they were going to bring him out.
