Research has been conducted for over 10 years on Norwegian Oil recovery and that has provided a significant knowledge.base.
The research was conducted based on the Long-term Effects of Discharges to the Sea from the Petroleum Activities (PROOF) program,.
Norway experiences difficulties in sustainable recovery of petroleum in the northern regions. Petroleum activities will be extended continuously in northern marine regions of Norway in future.
The research had a goal of discovering long-term impacts from the accidental and operational discharges of the oil and gas industry into the sea. The research findings of the PROOF program have shown that this concern has been caused due to the discharge of the produced water with various toxic substances.
The studies have validated the negative impacts caused by the components found in produced water. The impacts include function, health and reproduction in invertebrates and fish species.
Assessment of risks, based on the results from the environmental monitoring process, has shown the moderate hazards of ecological damage across the board.
When the well is drilled, a variety of fluids will be utilized in order to lubricate the drill bit, stabilize the walls and pressure on well, and cutting up of transport from the borehole. Drilling fluids based on water are mainly utilized on the Norwegian continental shelf.
