Protests Over Proposed Peruvian Copper Mine

Reuters reports protests at a proposed copper mine in Peru. The Tia Maria mine, owned by the Southern Copper Corp., is located in the Peruvian province of Islay. The protests are headed by farmers from different community groups such as the Association for Sustainable Development in the Tambo Valley and the Front for the Defence of the Tambo Valley.

The project at Tia Maria had been put on hold following earlier protests April this year. Government and local communities are working on an environmental impact study before the mining activities at the location will be allowed to resume.

Recent protests by hundreds of people grew violent as the police stepped in to control the situation. Four people were injured in clashes between the police and the protesting groups with ten people being detained after the event.

The Southern Copper Chief Executive Oscar Gonzalez Rocha said that the Tia Maria project would take off despite the minority involved in protests. He expects the mine to produce 120,000 tons of copper annually. Peru is the second largest copper producer in the world after its neighbour Chile.
