South African Mine Output Jumps 2.8%

Mining production in South Africa has gone up by 2.8% as compared to last year in February.

This figure was reached after a revised 3.2% rise in production in January as per Statistics South Africa. For the quarter ending February 2011 the mining production went up by 5.1% compared to the same quarter in 2010.

According to Statistics South Africa the seasonally adjusted value of the minerals sales in the February 2011 quarter increased 4.8% compared to the quarter ending October 2010. This was boosted by a 2.1% or R3.8bn rise in iron ore sales and a 1.1% or R906.2 million rise in coal sales.

The main contributors to the mining production increase came from the platinum group metals which contributed 1.9 percentage points. The sales value of iron ore contributed 2.1 percentage points and the coal mining production also contributed 1.1 percentage points to the whole.
