Workers Delay Return to Work at Freeport-McMoRan Mine in Indonesia

At the Freeport-McMoRan mine in Indonesia workers have delayed their return to work. They have been on strike for a three month period which finally ended on December 14 as the company agreed to demands to increase wages by 37%.

However even with the strike ended the workers have delayed their return to work at the Grasberg mine as claims were made that 500 employees who went on strike have been threatened with dismissal. These employees were working for contractors.

The union spokesman Virgo Solossa said  it was unlikely that they will be back to work tomorrow as around 500 workers from several sub-contractor companies still had issues that need to be settled first.

The Grasberg mine is the second largest copper mine in the world. It is located in the central highlands of Papua Island in eastern Indonesia. The production has suffered tremendously in the mine as 8,000 union workers went off the job in September last year. It was the first time that such a step was taken by mine workers to get a share of the profits that the company was generating. The company has also agreed to improved housing allowances, educational assistance and retirement savings plan for the workers.
