Policy Paper Discusses on Production Improvement by Canadian Hydrocarbon Energy Sector

A joint policy paper has been released by the Public Policy Forum and Genome Alberta. Enhancing Energy Production and Environmental Outcomes through Genomics: The case for innovation is the title of the paper that deals with how the Canadian hydrocarbon energy segment can show an enhancement in its production and the sector can be more eco-friendly through genomic research.

A day-long workshop has discovered the genomics capacity to ease the environmental impact of oil and gas expansion in regions like tailings ponds and the potential to improve the production of energy with the help of genomic-based tools. This workshop was organized by the Public Policy Forum and Genome Alberta in Calgary, in February 2012. The policy paper includes the recommendations and summary from the workshop, in which leaders from government, industry, non-profit organizations and research institutions participated.

Genome Alberta’s CEO and President, Dr. David Bailey stated that this field has great potential. Metagenomic research has been contributing to the main issues like tailings ponds emissions and corrosion of pipelines, according to Bailey.

Hydrocarbon Metagenomics project of Genome Alberta has been offering grants to the research in the region and this project uses the science of metagenomics in order to identify and examine the genetic capability of organisms in ecological remediation and oil extraction.

According to this policy paper, this field will enable growth in energy innovation significantly and will function as a test model for a joint approach for innovation in Canada. Genome and other partners have been recognized as major leaders to improve policy in this region, by means of collaborating with universities and business.
