The Saudi Arabian mining joint venture of Ma'aden-Alcoa announced plans to create the first fully integrated aluminium smelter and food grade sheet rolling mill in the kingdom. There are sixteen financial institutions which will provide the $1.9 billion funding required for the project.

India's Coal Deficit to Grow Next Year

The Indian coal deficit will be all the more evident in the coming year. India is currently facing acute coal shortage and will be required to import fuel in even larger quantities in the future. The shortage in the next fiscal year will reach 104 million tonnes as per Sriprakash Jaiswal, the Indian Coal Minister.

Rubicon Minerals Corp saw its share price rise more than 33% as it reported that the Phoenix gold project of the company may have up to 4 million ounces of gold. Located in Red Lake in Ontario the deposit is close to Goldcorp’s Red Lake mine in north western Ontario.

Accident at St Andrew Goldfields Holt Gold Mine Halts Production

Work at the St Andrew Goldfields Ltd owned Holt gold mine has come to a halt. The mine located east of Timmins in Ontario was damaged in part in an accident on Friday afternoon. No mine workers were injured in the accident.

Rio Tinto to Open Underground Mining Research Facility in Ontario

An investment of $10 million will be made by Rio Tinto over the next five years to create a centre to research underground mine construction in Ontario, Canada. The project in partnership with the Centre for Excellence in Mining Innovation (CEMI) will be based in Sudbury Ontario.

Rio Tinto's South African subsidiary Palabora Mining Co has filed an appeal against the government decision to strip it of some of its mining rights. The copper producing company is appealing about the granting of a mining right to a third party in an area where the company already holds an old order mining right.

Mining Driving Queensland Economy

The mining industry is the largest generator of jobs in Queensland with more than 130,000 jobs being created directly and indirectly by the industry in the last year in Brisbane alone, according to a Queensland Resources Council report released this week. The Queensland mining industry has also generated around $3.8 billion in income tax in the last financial year as well.
