Report Says Fewer Jobs in Current Australian Mining Boom

The mining boom has not led to more jobs as per a report from the University of Adelaide. The Australian Institute for Social Research published a report saying that while 12,500 people were given employment in the mining sector in 2007 the numbers fell quite a bit in 2010 with just under 8,000 people getting jobs within the mining sector.

Lundin Mining Advises Shareholders to Reject Equinox Bid

Ludin Mining has asked its shareholders to reject the Canadian $4.7 billion bid made by Equinox Minerals saying that the offer is under valuing the company and is considered too uncertain. Ludin Mining said that the debt financed takeover bid from the company was financially inadequate and highly risky.

Magellan Metals Resumes Lead Transport Operations in Western Australia

Magellan Metals Pty Ltd said that it would resume regular lead transport operations from its mine in Western Australia in the next few days. It said that after resumption of mining operations at the Magellan Mine in February 2011 there was a stockpile of lead concentrate waiting at its Wiluna mine site.

A Boost for the Timber Industry from the Pilbara

Timber workers from Manjimup are the latest beneficiaries of the Pilbara region mining industry’s booming success. The mining giant Rio Tinto has decided to hire 24 former timber workers giving them a fresh lease of employment after the timber mills that they used to work for closed down.
